Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) have been accepted as important  tools   for development. Thus SET is included in Rukun Negara and Malaysian Five-Year Plans. The importance of science is reflected in the emphases given to science education. However, the scientific manpower required does not keep pace with development. In this context, the senior scientists can augment the inputs of scientists with their knowledge, experience and expertise. With this objective in mind, the idea of forming the Malaysian Senior Scientists' Association (MSSA) was mooted by Y. B. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Law Hieng Ding, when he was Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment

        A small band of senior scientists have been meeting regularly for two years, before MSSA was formed on 30 September 2004. After much deliberation the members are equally interested in providing their service to the community on an honorary basis as well as consultancy to government agencies and industry. The members have been giving talks in several disciplines to school students with the objective of providing comprehensive and objective perspectives of the spectrum of scientific disciplines.

        They have also inter-acted with young researchers with exchange of ideas and this has resulted in the publication of The Journal of Science and Technology in the Tropics. MSSA want to use their knowledge and expertise for public interest. One project being planned is to provide clean air, clean water and safe foods for society and known as the wholesome triangle.

        The launching of MSSA by Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad marks a milestone in its development. We are definitely encouraged and motivated to continue our journey of contribution to mankind.
